Summer Dinner

Corn Dog

Pan-fried eggplant layered with basil leaves, roasted peppers,
grape tomatoes, and oyster sauce.  All of the vegetables this
evening were grown within five miles of my house.
Seems like food always tastes better in the summer.

Grape tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, sliced shallots,
basil chiffonade, balsamic vinegar, and olive oil.

Jersey sweet corn. Boil a ton of fairly heavily salted water, drop the
corn in, turn the heat off, and let sit covered for 10 minutes.
Done. Place the cobs on a large platter and wrap with a cloth.
Good enough on its own, but the author needs to have it with
melted butter, brushed on, and either Old Bay, celery salt,
or good old salt and cracked black pepper.

Top Round London Broil, marinated in Worcestershire, Soy, Ketchup,
Honey, Garlic, and Ginger.  There will be enough for my wife's lunch
tomorrow, and snacks and dinner for a couple more days.  Rarely do
we not have leftovers, and never do we waste anything.

  1. I won't lie - I'm not as keen on all the shellfish you keep posting about, but this one definitely piques my interest.

that whole meal you just laid out looks amazing. just bloody amazing.

  2. Thanks, M2F. Really more simple than it may appear. Nothing with more than 4-5 ingredients is always good.

  4. Now I get it: 829 Southdrive is a restaurant!!! A gourmet B & B?

Why am I so slow on things?

  5. so cool that all this food is from so near where you live! can't beat that! and, something i learned from mom which i just cannot change: we boil (sometimes grill) the corn with husks on. Might de-silk a bit before putting into the pot, but i love the 'green leafy/husky' taste that keeping them on seems to give the corn.

  6. Oh, yes, I love to put sweet corn on the grill with the husks on. It makes a great accompaniment for beer-can chicken. I've always de-silked and then folded the husks back around the cobs, but I just read an article in the newspaper that says not to bother -- the silks (supposedly) come off more easily after grilling. I'll have to try it and see.

  7. Localize the food - wonderful. What is chiffonade? Never mind, I'll use "the google" and find out. Sounds like a 60's Motown act though - "Hazel and the Chiffonades"?

  8. Since I've been asked: The A-Cat is a boat for a young man with a whole lot of young friends. That aside, it definitely looks like fun!
