Well, if you sail a boat with a defective design which causes your head to come into frequent contact with the boom, a helmet comes in handy.
Of course, if you are a fan of statistics, it isn't so much bicyclists, football players, or sailors who need to wear helmets, but rather the occupants of automobiles. We kill them off by the tens of thousands each year (and rarely mention the seriously injured).
Personally, though I don't wear one while sailing the Lido, I'm all for helmets where MY brain is involved. When in comes to cars though I draw the line. I don't travel in one if other transport is available. :)
