Sidetracked!

I traveled to Philly in search of some Pho (Fuh),
but drove past Reading Terminal, wait......... huh?

I had a roast pork sandwich at Tommy Dinic's (Dinitch's),
who uses broccoli rabes insteads of spinaches.

Knowing I was close to Siu Kee Duck House,
I bought 3 wings and 2 quails, (not 2 grouse).

The roasted fowl all hung in the window with care,
with hopes that Baydog soon would be there.

The aroma it encircled my head like a wreath,
and left grease on my fingers and a bone in my teeth.

No Vietnamese beef noodle soup this time down.
But it's only 35 minutes to Chinatown!

  2. wow, that all looks a lot better than tonight's dinner of some air-popped popcorn.

    1. I know, I know.

all 3 kids are at my in-laws for a couple weeks. my wife and I have gone out to restaurants a few times already, and wanted a night at home, but didn't have any groceries and weren't terribly hungry anyway.

I also had a toasted English muffin.

      does that help any?

  4. Better marmalade than Marmite.

Now that's what I'm talkin' about.

With all of this good food in Philly, why does a sandwich made of groundhog meat and Cheezwhiz get all the press?

    1. Oh nooooo, O Docker! Haven't you learned your lesson about speaking disparagingly of Marmite?

      you rebel you!

Baydog, thanks for the reminder - I found a place by the Manhattan Bridge that serves odd birds - have to go back there for some squab one of these days.

And if Mandy and I hit the flower show again next year I'm definitely going for Dinic's pulled pork instead of groundhog steak.

ps - buried deep after the archery today there's a sort of a restaurant review of the place I went for dinner the first night in Tallinn. Turned out to be really good. Boy did I eat a lot of smoked fish that week!

  6. Baydog, as a fellow "Pho-Bro" (yes, I am cracking myself up on that one) do you ask for your meat raw on the side, and cook it in the soup one slice at a time? Or just have restaurant put it in all at the same time.

    1. One slice at a time, kinda like shabu shabu. Hmm, never thought of it. I imagine the meat that some Vietnamese restaurants use is probably better off being cooked as soon as possible at the highest temperature.

  7. You may be right, but what does a Killer Whale have to do with food? Oh, and not to embarrass you but his name is "Shamu" not "Shabu Shabu". Anyhoo did you ever notice the concentrated amount of missing dog posters around those pho restaurants? Really people should keep their dogs on a leash so they do not get lost.

  8. I note that the jalapeno protuberance is completely missing (including the stem) in the "after" picture.

Any comment on its path through the digestive system?

    1. That thought crossed my mind and of course MFC caught it. An uneventful event, as is most often the case. BTW, less than 5 months 'til OFD.

    2. Atta boy-- an uneventful passing. DRJ would be proud.

And 4th of July is definitely not too early to call out OFD! I happened to be thinking of it this week as well!

    4. Thank you I will, especially as I am swimming in the Sound at 6:00 tomorrow morning. If that rule of thumb is true, I figure I still have an hour of wake time.

  9. BTW, in the roast pork sangwich photo comment, you appear to have been struck by a fever of awkward plurals: broccoli rabes and spinaches?? The nouns are like deer or moose-- no "s" necessary for a group of them. (Not to mention "insteads".)
