1. Who's the Skipper and wife?
2. Where was the photo taken?
3. What class of boat?
4. What was the hull/sail number?
BTW: Two years ago today, the Grand Dame of
the Princeton culinary scene closed her doors, after
ninety-one years of serving the masses the best French
and American cuisine in Central Jersey.
Don't think for a second that I forgot about this date.
A day that will live in infamy.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you were able to visit me there, including my surprise 40th B-day party, which was most certainly a frickin' mind-blowing surprise.
DeleteThat particular closing day (11/13/10), was by far the most difficult, emotionally challenging day of my entire life, and I hope I never have to endure anything half as brutal. It took me ten days to even post about it.
1. Len and Dorothy Penso
ReplyDelete2. Potomac River
3. Penguin
4. 1881
Of all my readers (3), I would have bet you would not be the one to bite on the false clue. Len Penso was a sailing legend, but the man with the aviator glasses goes by another name.
DeleteAh. Classic misdirection. I must use that trick in my next quiz.
ReplyDeleteSecond attempt
ReplyDelete1. Jim and Jill Wagner
2. Potomac River
3. Penguin
4. 8839
Your answer to #3 is correct. The sailors are somewhat older though.
DeleteThe correct answers could be a real 'Downer'.
Delete1. Runyon Colie, Jr. and wife
ReplyDelete2. Mantoloking
3. Penguin
4. 1377
O Docker may well be right because he is wicked smart at these quizzes. But I will hazard another guess.
ReplyDeleteLooking more closely, the adults do seem to be a lot older than the kids, possibly more like their grandparents than the parents. And the wife doesn't look all that comfortable in the boat - worried expression, hand on the gunwale for balance even in very light wind.
So I'm guessing that this couple is not an experienced sailboat racing team and that they are out for a sail with their grandsons.
Could this be Joseph and Catherine Jomo?
The Jomos were definitely not sailors. O Docker is wicked smart at these quizzes, for sure. But you were probably asleep when the hint was slid.
DeleteNo, I did see the hint. I assumed it was another of your deliberately misleading clues.
ReplyDeleteHaving too much time on your hands to google isn't the same thing as being smart.
ReplyDeleteI thought maybe the woman was worried about the young child she's holding. This doesn't look like a race day - they were probably just taking the kids for a sail - in a very small boat. The photo does look like it's from the late fifties or sixties, a time when RC, Jr. seems to have been racing and winning a lot.
I found a mention that Runyon's wife Betsy did crew for him in races and a photo of the two of them sailing a Penguin, but it was from too far away to make out the faces. What was odd (to me, at least) was that he was standing at the helm - just like the guy in your photo. Was that a common thing in Penguins?
Looks like in the above photo they were either leaving or arriving at the dock.
DeleteThe other photo shows them possibly having just tacked?
I think its Judge Smails, probably on his way to Bushwood C.C. The kid in the mothers lap looks like he is going to puke.
ReplyDeleteSo who were the two kids? Was one of them Dev Colie?
ReplyDeleteDev and Lea (sp?) I believe.
DeleteSo the photo must be from the early 50s. Dev was born in 1950 according to his Facebook page. There's a great picture of Betsy with Dev as a little boy in his photos there.
ReplyDeleteOff Topic: I like the new masthead photo. Noting the date, and recognizing the big kid on the left (I think)!
ReplyDeleteYep.
DeleteGood eye, Doc. And the big kid was only 6!
DeleteAnd that big kid and his brother and cousins wouldn't realize for decades how GD lucky they all were growing up at the shore in the summer, and the immediate access to boats and water they all had in their Grandparents' back yards.
DeleteOde to the Metedeconk
DeleteI know how GD lucky you were. I am GD jealous...
