  1. Or is Richie staying with you?!

  2. Yeah, we'll be terrorizing NJ this weekend. I pick Richie up at Phila. Airport at 2:30 tomorrow. We'll make an appearance at the Candlelight Lounge Jazz Jam (in deepest darkest Trenton) in the late afternoon, and then it's on to Bordentown for sets at the Record Collector starting at 7:30. Sunday we are at the Stanhope Inn, Stanhope, NJ, but I'm not sure of the time. It's a pretty famous venue, so you might be able to google it. I know you will be up for a wild evening of Jazz, as you will be primed and in fine shape after tailgating at the game Sunday. Looking forward to possibly sailing 10/23. Can we have Hot Dogs for lunch?

  3. Stanhope! My old stomping ground.

Do you mean the Stanhope House (not Inn) the "last great American roadhouse" where Stevie Ray Vaughn scrubbed dishes in the kitchen and Muddy Waters traded chicken recipes with Mama Wrobleski?

  4. That's correct. I guess if Richie and I could not find the Stanhope Inn, we would have ended up at the Stanhope House. By the way, where is Stanhope?

  5. It's west of West New York and east of Jersey Shore.

  6. Richie Cole - man, when it was hip to be hep, he was hep. I'd love to be there. Thanks for the video.

That trombone looks like a King 2B Silversonic - nickel slide, solid silver bell that is gold plated inside. I played one for forty years - yes, it is a bit heavy but the tone is wonderful.

  7. I absolutely KNEW you'd appreciate that, PB.

  8. To Tillerman,

Why don't you have a cup of herbal tea and go to bed early. The name of the song your searching for is "East of the Sun and West of the Moon." Google Princeton Triangle Club or contact Jim Robinson.....who stole my piano.

  9. Or maybe Google Jim Robinson and contact the Princeton Triangle Club. Who did steal that piano anyway? Billy Joel? And I thought Jim Robinson was dead.

  10. You know, Billy Joel really did play that piano. Did I ever tell you about that rainy night?

  11. Stanhope is on the Morris Canal. Or it would be if the Morris Canal hadn't been abandoned for 80 years.

  12. Now I'm getting curious about NJ canal history.
I imagine Morris connected to the Deleware - Raritan somehow... think I'll break out the kayaks.

  13. The Morris Canal connected Phillipsburg on the Delaware to Jersey City on the Hudson. The Delaware and Raritan Canal ran from from Bordentown on the Delaware to New Brunswick on the Raritan. I don't think they connected to each other.

NJ canal history is an interesting topic. There are relics of both canals all over the place including some sections still with water.

  14. Well, as long as you're dredging up obscure jazz clubs in the wilds of New Jersey, do you know about the Deer Head, Baydog?

OK, it's technically in PA, at the Water Gap, but close enough. You may have driven right past it taking your daughter to summer camp, but are excused for not recognizing it as a functioning jazz club, or as a functioning anything else.

I see they're still hosting jazz and that Phil Woods will be there on October 29th. One of their claims to fame is that Keith Jarrett once recorded a live album there. I wonder if Mr. Cole has ever played there.
