Out and About

Unlike the temperature that fateful night in 1776,  it was a beautiful
day on the Delaware River.  And this time I made it to Lambertville
on my ride, crossed over into New Hope, and down the Pennsy side
back to Washington Crossing (PA).  Everyone was dining outside at
lunch today, and more than a few were working on their tans.

  1. Me too. Working on my tan that is. Our local clam shack with outside dining opens on Monday. Can't wait.

  2. So you took the bridge across the river at Washington's Crossing?

I think the only reason Washington didn't was that he knew the boats would make for a better painting.

  3. I had to walk the bike across. Both ways. Buzzkill. I heard the bridge tenders come down hard on rulebreakers. I was actually more out of breath after crossing on foot than riding to get there.

  4. Please tell me that John and Peters is still in existence, I had many a found memory (I think) in that fine New Hope establishment.

  5. I'm not familiar with John and Peters. It must be one of my lost memories.

  6. Baydog,

This place is an old Hippie bar, It has a stage in the back where local bands play. Its nothing special just a very comfortable place. Tex Mex is or was their fare, and the atmosphere was always good. Check it out next time, hopefully it has not changed.

    1. Hey Doug - if you are interested in learning how to post a hot link in your comment, see the protocol below. I attach an example, with dummy $ signs at the beginning an end so you can see the code without it becoming live:

      $Hippie bar$

Take off the $ signs and it should work, appearing as "Hippie bar" in your comment.

  7. whoops, the dummy $ signs didn't work...

  8. Ok, try this. To make this a live link, reverse the direction of the opening and closing arrow, so the opening is < and the last is >.

  9. Actually the URL needs to be in quotation marks.

    <a href="http://www.johnandpeters.com/">Hippie bar</a>

  10. I copied and pasted that code from the last comment into here and get Hippie bar

  11. You might need the quotes only if there is a space or some other goofiness in the URL.

Here it is without the quotes:

    Hippie bar

I usually use the 'preview' feature to test links before posting, but then I'm one of those strange people who always checks their pocket for car keys before slamming the car door.

John and Peters was a wild and wooly place back when I lived in Lambertville, but since I was usually looking for a quieter place to grab a beer with the guys after work, I tended not to hang there. Good to see it hasn't been gentrified, though.

Every town needs some wild and wooly.

    1. I never knew you didn't need quotes there. That's the wonderful thing about 829southdrive. Best blog on the planet for learning about HTML in the comments.

    2. O' Docker,

When I as there in the late 80's it was a pretty mellow place. On Sunday afternoons the Harley Davidson Bikers would show up but they where very reserved and did not bother anyone(as long as you did not park anything motorcycle but a Harley in front of the bar). What they did have was great local music, Rolling Rock long neck beers and "not so bad" Tex Mex "grub", and the emphasis is on "grub"

    3. Grubs actually provide protein, given that you eat enough of them. Baywife and I had lunch on the terrace of The Landing on Saturday. Nice afternoon.

    4. My favorite local restaurant in the late '70s was Mother's, which I see is still open, but now I can't find a single good review of the place. Too bad. It used to be one of the best eateries in the area and was always packed. They made all of their own pastries and had a bakery in town, near John and Peter's.

Times change, but as I'm sure you know, Baydog, it's always sad to see a good restaurant die.

  12. Always! check the pockets for car keys before slamming the door. After a while, Lakeside Towing gets tired of seeing your face, and eventually you're gonna have to tip him for breaking into your car.

BTW, Triple A Plus is well worth the membership:
I got flat-bedded home to Lawrenceville one Arctic night from Buttzville to my Mobil station, then dropped off in my driveway. Talk about feeling special.

  13. Regarding Buttzville, I was bummed when they didn't post their 3 or 5 course menus on their website. Must be because they change daily with the availability of their local purveyors' crops and herds.

  14. 829 Southdrive is also the best blog on the planet for learning about places like Butzville.

    2. Sorry Doc,

Just reread the blog post and realized Tillerman tanning ambitions. But he is eating clams in a shack that the outside dinning area has not opened yet... Tillerman, are you eating clams in a tanning booth. Is that healthy or even safe?

  16. Evelyn's is now open for the season. Tillerwoman and I will be down there eating clams and working on our tans as soon as the weather permits. The strong winds have made it a little chilly for sitting outside this week so far.
