Indispensable

Recently, we were without a microwave for a week.  My daughter
wanted a cup of tea the other day and actually asked me, without
thinking, how she was going to boil water.  Really.  It's amazing
how often you rely on microwaves for otherwise simply cooked
or re-heated foods.  What do you use your microwave for most?

  1. Is that the daughter that just graduated from HS?

  2. No, the younger one. She probably didn't ask but it was the inference from the look on her face.

  3. By the way, great looking Pig Roast, this is how we do it in the Keys. This is the real deal, you can do several Turkeys, lots of Chickens, Lamb and much more. Check this out:

  5. They are awesome, I only wish that I had mine here for my Fourth Party. They're quite mobile light so several people might think about sharing one. Light'em up and forget about it.

  6. Warm up mug half filled with milk prior to adding espresso to make my morning latte :)

  7. It's funny how emotional some people can get about microwaves.

I laugh at the 'real chefs' who refuse to use them for anything - even boiling water.

We use a small one on the boat, where we're almost always at the dock when attempting any cooking. There, 'cooking' usually means just heating something up or boiling water, and the microwave makes a lot more sense than fiddling with a gas bottle.

  8. Trivia Time: What was the name of the chef that had a cooking show just about microwave cooking?

  9. My favorite use for the microwave is to communicate with alien space ships in the sky who tell me where to go.

  10. Rewarming food, sometimes melting butter. I think my stove is faster heating water & also there you aren't saving yourself an extra pan that needs to be washed.

Never popcorn. Stovetop popcorn is SO much better.

Charley Best, I didn't know there was a show, but this post definitely gave me recollections of when microwaves truly went mass-market - remember all those cookbooks that came out around then that absolutely PROMISED you'd never use your conventional oven as anything but an extra cupboard.

PS - Anybody else getting put into endless loops when they try to post as Google profile?

  11. Bonnie, I agree with you and O Docker. The best popcorn is made in a pot with vegetable oil and a lid. As far as my younger daughter is concerned, I'd rather have her make it in the microwave. The one time we were out of popcorn bags, she burned the crap out of the popcorn and proceeded to fill the house with smoke. She panicked and put the glowing pot outside on the lawn.:)

  15. I use our microwave for lightly steaming broccoli. Ours also works as an oven, so I bake pizza in it too. Most everything else I do on a gas stove - including boiling water for tea.

  16. I accept cookies from Girl Scouts. Only after I pay for them. Man I don't miss bringing the cookie order sheet to work every year. I just miss the work.

  17. Whaddya mean, "the best popcorn"? Popcorn is popcorn, for crying out loud. And as far as micro waves are concerned, mine does my eggs while I'm busy getting my Doberwoman her gourmet breakfast. (And now, don't come at me about the "best eggs". Eggs are eggs!

  18. And I wish I had gas service on my street. Still oil heat and electric range for me, if you didn't already notice. Actually, although I'm completely against it, the microwave would probably boil water for me faster than the stupid glass-top electric stove.

  19. Doc, I would've thought you were an egg purist for some reason.

The first time I ever saw a microwave was in my friend Timmy's house. He did the beaten egg in the styrofoam cup for 30 seconds trick. I was flabberghasted. I ran home and got on the tin cans attached with string to tell my mom.

  22. Baydog - I like our little 2 burner gas stove with a small broiler for things like fish. In Japan, that's the common arrangement. No ovens. Our gas comes in bottles since Japan has none of its own and imports it as LNG. Electric would be an expensive joke here as we pay about 27¢ a kW!
